The Colony Hotel: Review
The Colony Hotel
If you've been dreaming of this place, the last thing I want to do is crush your dreams! The photos I have from the hotel are beautiful, but I don't want to pretend that I had an amazing stay here, because honestly - it was honestly.
I booked The Colony Hotel for my four nights in Seminyak based on recommendations from other travelers, Trip Advisor reviews, and because it looked gorgeous. I always prefer for a boutique hotel becauseI like the attention to detail and care that comes with a smaller property. My trips are not sponsored, but I decided on this and booked it myself. I was so excited to stay here!
On arrival, I was impressed. The location is right near to some of Seminyak’s most desirable spots - Sea Circus, Motel Mexicola, Ku De Ta, Potato Head Beach Club, Sisterfields, and Bossman Burgers were all walkable within 15 minutes. The property has chic vibes - tall palm trees, all white exterior with french doors, wicker furniture. It's tucked away down a small street so it's not noisy. Our welcome drink of watermelon juice hit the spot, and they were very helpful getting our bags to our room. The manager gave us a voucher for a free drink and a few bites over at Urchin, the fabulous restaurant next door for use anytime during our stay.
But our room was extremely disappointing. We booked a deluxe double room. I had wanted to book a grand deluxe (which is strangely the same cost) but none were available. Our room (No 9) was way below my standards for a luxury, "five-star" hotel. The interior needed a coat of paint and some repairs. The room clean, but overall it was too worn for the price tag of $170/night. (For Indonesia, that's pricey for a hotel for a non-resort.)
This was also the smallest room I stayed in (range in size from 32 to 38 sq meters). Bali accommodations are spacious, even at a budget hotel. It was essentially a plain white box inside, lacking any of charm that the outside had so much of. I may have felt differently if we had been in grand deluxe room, or a junior or grand suite.
While the pool is beautiful, there are only twelve pool chairs. There are twenty-five rooms, so there were a few times during our four-day stay that this was an issue. It’s simply that there isn’t room around for the pool for more chairs, so this is a problem they can’t fix. On a sunny day, you’ll need to snag your chair early if you want one. I had to sit upstairs on a wood bench to do my reading - which made for a lovely photo, but was not relaxing.
Breakfast was included with our room, and served outside by the pool. This is a nice perk, but it was nothing special. Since Bali is the land of amazing eats - each day afterward we left and had breakfast elsewhere.
All things considered, my friend and I both agreed we wouldn’t stay at The Colony again. It is extremely photogenic - but not worth your money. If you do visit, I would only book a grand deluxe or suite, and for the cost of a suite here you could stay at a beach-front hotel instead.
And I mention in my trip planning guide, I don’t recommend visiting Seminyak - unless what you’re seeing is partying at beach clubs and shopping. If you want to see the area, head north to Canggu where it's more beautiful and laid-back.
